Diagnostic and Therapeutic Colonoscopy

Performed for symptoms such as bleeding per rectum, abdominal pain, change in bowel habit or unexplained loss of weight. It is also performed for screening purposes for patients aged 50 years and above, and for patients at high-risk of colorectal cancer. Polyps can be removed via the colonoscope, thereby reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.

Colonoscopy is performed as a day procedure and after the procedure, a detailed report will be provided to the patient and findings will be discussed with the patients.

Day Surgery Operations

Day surgery operations are available for piles (including stapled hemorrhoidectomy), anal fissure, pilonidal disease, anal warts, anorectal sepsis (abscesses) and fistula.

Stapled hemorrhoidectomy is a new minimally invasive operation for piles. It has been shown to be a less painful operation for piles compared with traditional open hemorrhoidectomy. It also results in a faster recovery and a quicker return to normal activities.

Colorectal Cancer Services

We provide comprehensive evaluation of patients suspected to have colorectal cancer (including a 3D endorectal ultrasonography for accurate rectal cancer staging); sphincter-preserving radical excision (operations that preserve the anus) for rectal cancer; laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for suitable patients with colorectal cancer; transanal excision for early-stage rectal cancer.

Accurate preoperative rectal cancer staging is important as optimal management can then be tailored to the patient with good survival outcomes and a higher likelihood of preserving the anus.

Our centre is one of few centres in Singapore and Asia offering Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) as a surgical option for colorectal cancer patients. Compared to traditional open surgery (which involves making a big cut on the patient's abdomen), MIS involves much smaller cuts. MIS for colorectal cancer has

been shown to be in equivalent cancer-specific survival rates compared with traditional open surgery. The benefits for MIS for colorectal cancer are:

  1. Less postoperative pain
  2. Fewer lung complications
  3. Quicker return of gut function and motility which translates to earlier resumption of oral intake
  4. Less postoperative stress which may have some benefit in terms of lower cancer recurrences
  5. Shorter hospital stay

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Surgery

Surgery for inflammatory boweasdisease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), including pelvic pouch construction.

Pelvic Floor Laboratory

Housed within the same premises is a Pelvic Floor Laboratory. Equipped with the diagnostic equipment, we are able to assess and deal effectively with disorders of the pelvic floor and handle symptoms of incontinence and constipation.

Imaging of the anus and rectum can also be performed with our 3D-ultrasound equipment. We are thus able to evaluate anorectal sepsis accurately. With this assessment tool, we can discuss the best treatment options available to the patient including conventional surgery or more novel treatments like fibrin glue injection or Botox injection for chronic anal fissure which can be performed in the clinic.
